Practicing for a 45 minute talk takes a long time!

Posted on April 15, 2010 at 10:15 PM in (176) Comments

…or 45 minutes to be exact.

Or close to it. If you’re rehearsing your talk while eating a cheese plate and watching the Phillies game, then it can take 2 hours. Or if your rehearsal is mixed with well-thought out feedback and thoughtful debate from your awesome coworker, one Mr. Mark Huot, then it takes closer to an hour and 15.

I’m pretty close to trying to get to that magic number, though. And really, really excited to be speaking at JSConf 2010 in DC this weekend!!

The conference was a blast last year, and put on by tremendously smart and awesome people.

Plus, I’m going to have that boat song in my head all weekend…which is quite alright in my book!
Pirate cruise!!!

Hope to see some of you folks there!

I find that when I’m prepping for a presentation there are two ways to go about it…  okay, three.

First way, the “memorized on time” method where I have a set script and time index for certain points (paragraphs).  Works well but can be rather ridged.

The second, “speak (fly) by the seat of your pants” method where I use points, bullets or outline and then just “wing” it though the presentation.  Works—not so good.  (_)

The third and the method I use now is the “Christmas Time” method.  This is where I create a script with time index on the left side bar and then I color code things that need to be stated (red) or that can be skipped (green).  I like this best as it allows me to keep a timer (iPhone) going while I’m speaking and I can shift the meter of the conversation, interject, expound on a topic, interact with audience or other levels of speaker interaction that are necessary.

How do you do it?  Which method do you use?  Will you try the Christmas Time method?  (_)

Well, honestly it all depends on what you are going to talk about. If the speaker is familiar with the subject matter the process becomes a lot easier. However, an intense rehearsal does help to accomplish you goal. I totally agree that getting good feedbacks during rehearsal is a great way to point out your weakness as a speaker and thus helps to fine tune the speech.

The Catechism Cataclysm takes some juvenile detours (the priest loses his Bible in a backed-up toilet), and its allusions to Mark Twain and John Steinbeck are puddle-deep, but William and Robbie’s adventure has a shaggy-dog charm that’s hard to resist. There may not be a north face jackets on sale in it — certainly nothing William can take back to his congregation — but their friendship is real. And that’s enough.
